Vela Patria began writing short stories and poetry in her youth. She grew up surrounded by Cuban culture. Her parents and brother are from Havana Cuba and came to the United States in the late 1950’s. They went on to become naturalized citizens. Great music and food filled her childhood home. At age five, she began to play the piano and in her teenage years she wrote the lyrics to her original jazz and pop songs. Vela Patria was inspired to write by her mother’s love for languages. Vela Patria was always curious about the cultural backgrounds of first-generation Americans. She enjoyed listening to the stories of their first-time experiences in the US. Her short stories are fiction, yet her poetry is based on true experiences.

Vela Patria majored in performance at Berklee College of Music. She is nourishing her writing skills with various workshops. She currently attends Southern New Hampshire University where she majors in Psychology.
